Many families travelling to Istanbul for their own dental treatment want to arrange care for their children at the same time. Our clinic welcomes children for routine check-ups, preventive treatments and straightforward restorative work. This page explains honestly what is suitable for a dental tourism visit — and where local care in your home country is the more appropriate choice.

Children's dental services

The following services are routinely available for children at our Istanbul clinic:

  • Check-up and examination: a thorough assessment of teeth, bite and gum health, with any concerns explained clearly to parents. The pace is adapted to each child.
  • Scale and polish / cleaning:professional removal of plaque and tartar buildup, with guidance on brushing technique tailored to the child's age.
  • Fillings: composite (tooth-coloured) fillings for primary (baby) and permanent teeth. Local anaesthetic is used, and the team takes care to keep the experience as calm as possible.
  • Fluoride treatment: a concentrated fluoride varnish applied to help strengthen enamel and protect against decay — particularly beneficial for children at higher cavity risk.
  • Fissure sealants: thin protective coatings applied to the deep grooves of back teeth to prevent decay in areas that are difficult to clean. Most commonly applied to first and second permanent molars as they erupt.
  • Extractions: where a tooth cannot be saved or a baby tooth is causing problems, straightforward extractions are performed with care and appropriate pain management.
A gentle, unhurried approach.

Every child moves at their own pace. The team is experienced in helping children feel comfortable in the dental chair — including those who have had difficult experiences before. We always explain what we are doing and why, in age-appropriate language.

Practical guidance for travelling families

Combining children's dental care with a family dental trip can be practical and efficient. It is also important to be honest about the limits of what works well in this context.

Well-suited to a dental tourism visit:

  • Routine check-ups and cleans
  • Preventive treatments: fluoride, fissure sealants
  • Straightforward fillings in cooperative children
  • Simple extractions of baby or problem teeth

Better handled locally in your home country:

  • Complex or extensive restorative work requiring multiple visits or staged treatment
  • Children who need dental treatment under general anaesthetic — this requires specialist paediatric dental hospital facilities and ongoing local follow-up
  • Children with significant dental phobia or special needs requiring specialist behaviour-management expertise
  • Orthodontic treatment (braces, aligners) that requires regular review appointments over many months
  • Dental emergencies occurring while not planned — urgent acute care for children is always best managed locally where follow-up care is accessible
Contact us before travelling with children.

If you are unsure whether your child's needs are appropriate for our clinic, contact us in advance with a brief description of what is needed. We will tell you honestly whether it is a good fit, rather than simply accepting the appointment and letting you find out at assessment.

Children's dentistry questions, answered

The clinic sees children from approximately age 3 upwards for routine check-ups and preventive care. For very young children (under 3), or for infants with concerns such as teething complications or lip/tongue tie, a specialist paediatric dental hospital or community dental service in your home country is usually more appropriate — they are better equipped for very small patients. The clinical team will advise honestly if your child's age or needs mean local care is a better fit.
For routine and preventive needs — check-ups, a filling, fluoride treatment, fissure sealants — visiting an experienced Istanbul clinic during a family trip is a practical option. Where it is less appropriate: complex or emergency paediatric cases, very anxious children who may need specialist behaviour-management techniques, or children who need general anaesthetic for treatment. If you are unsure, contact us in advance with details of your child's situation and we will give you an honest assessment.
Dental treatment under general anaesthetic for children is a specialist paediatric service requiring dedicated hospital facilities, a paediatric anaesthetist and specialist training. This is not something we provide as part of our standard dental tourism service. Families where a child requires general anaesthetic for dental treatment should seek this through a specialist paediatric dental hospital in their home country, where ongoing care and follow-up are more straightforward to manage.
Fissure sealants are thin coatings applied to the biting surfaces of back teeth (usually the first and second permanent molars as they erupt) to prevent decay in the deep grooves that are hard to clean. They are one of the most effective preventive treatments available for children. Not every child needs them — the decision depends on the shape of the tooth grooves, the child's cavity history and their brushing effectiveness. The dentist will assess and advise, not apply them automatically.
The clinical team is experienced in working with anxious and nervous young patients. Approaches include taking extra time to explain instruments and procedures, working at the child's pace, using distraction techniques and, where suitable, relative analgesia (nitrous oxide / happy gas) to reduce anxiety. For children with severe dental phobia or complex behavioural needs, specialist paediatric dental departments in your home country — where continuity with a familiar team is possible — are likely to produce better long-term outcomes.
Indicative prices: a check-up and clean from €60–80 per child; a filling from €80–120 depending on size and material; fluoride treatment from €40; fissure sealants from €30–50 per tooth. Emergency appointments from €80. These are indicative per-visit figures — a specific quote will be provided once the clinical team has reviewed what your child needs. Children's treatment pricing is broadly similar to adult treatment for equivalent procedures.
Keep the atmosphere calm and matter-of-fact — children often pick up on parental anxiety. Let the child know they will be looked at by a dentist who speaks English and that you will be with them throughout. Avoid making negative associations ("it won't hurt" can paradoxically raise concern). Bring any relevant dental records or X-rays if available, as this helps the dentist assess your child's situation more efficiently. The team is used to working with international families and will go at the child's pace.
