Veneers or crowns for a Hollywood smile?

This is the question at the heart of the “Turkey teeth” controversy, and it deserves a direct, honest answer.

Veneers are the right choice for healthy teeth with no major structural issues. They preserve most of the original tooth — only the front 0.3–0.7 mm is reduced — and achieve excellent cosmetic results. For the vast majority of patients seeking a Hollywood smile, veneers are sufficient and appropriate on every tooth being treated.

Crowns are appropriate where a tooth is heavily filled, structurally compromised, has had root canal treatment, or is so misaligned that a veneer alone cannot achieve the desired result. Crowning a tooth removes significantly more structure and is an irreversible decision. It is the correct clinical choice in the right circumstances — but it is not the correct choice for healthy teeth simply because a clinic wants to use the same preparation template across all patients.

Our protocol is case-by-case: each tooth in the smile zone is assessed individually. Where veneers are clinically appropriate, veneers are what we recommend. A patient with 20 healthy, intact front teeth should leave with 20 veneers — not 20 crowns. If a clinic cannot give you a clear explanation of why crowns are needed on any given tooth, that is worth questioning before you agree to treatment.

Preparation & temporaries

Days 3–5

Laboratory & shade matching

Your e.max veneers are handcrafted in a certified dental laboratory. The ceramist works from photographs, shade guides and your DSD file to produce the final result. This is where quality time is spent.

Day 6–7

Final fitting & adjustments

A full upper-and-lower makeover commonly involves 16–20 units total. However, the number is determined by your smile line, not by a fixed formula. Your specialist photographs your smile in multiple positions and identifies the exact teeth that are visible before recommending how many units are needed. You are never pushed into treating teeth that do not show.

Veneer preparation — the standard approach for healthy teeth — removes only 0.3–0.7 mm of enamel from the front surface. This is minimal, and in many cases no-prep or minimal-prep laminates are possible without removing any enamel at all.
