Clear aligners have become the default orthodontic treatment for adults who want to straighten teeth without the look or food restrictions of fixed braces. Not every case is suitable, though — and the choice between a branded system like Invisalign, a clinic-own aligner, or conventional braces depends on the complexity of tooth movement needed and your orthodontist's honest clinical assessment.
Clear aligners vs Invisalign — what is the difference?
Invisalign is a brand name, not a category. It is produced by Align Technology and is the most extensively studied aligner system globally. Other clear aligner brands — and clinic-own systems — work on the same principle but differ in software sophistication, manufacturing precision and the range of tooth movements they can reliably achieve.
| System | Best suited to | Approximate cost (Istanbul) |
|---|---|---|
| Invisalign (Align Technology) | Mild to complex cases; most evidence base; wide range of movements | from €1,500 |
| Other branded aligners | Mild to moderate cases; good for straightforward crowding and spacing | from €1,200 |
| Clinic-own / generic aligners | Mild cases only; must be assessed and monitored by a clinician | from €900 |
Prices are indicative per full case. The right system depends on your tooth movements — not on which looks most appealing in a brochure. Your orthodontist will recommend based on clinical suitability.
Clear aligners vs fixed braces
Fixed braces — whether metal or ceramic — remain the gold standard for complex tooth movement. They give the orthodontist continuous control over forces applied to teeth, and are generally more reliable for rotations, extrusion, intrusion and skeletal corrections. The trade-off is visibility, dietary restrictions and the difficulty of cleaning around brackets.
- Aligners are better for: adults with mild to moderate crowding or spacing who prioritise discretion and removability; cases where dietary flexibility and ease of cleaning matter.
- Braces are better for: complex rotations, significant bite correction, intrusion or extrusion of teeth, cases where patient compliance with wearing aligners 20+ hours a day is uncertain.
- Combined approaches: some orthodontists use a phase of fixed braces followed by aligner refinement, or vice versa — to get the best of both systems.
Fixed metal and ceramic braces are available at the Istanbul clinic. The same honest assessment applies: if braces are a better clinical choice for your case, that is what you will be advised.
Who is a candidate — and the orthodontist's role
An orthodontist is a dental specialist with additional postgraduate training in tooth movement, jaw development and bite correction. This expertise matters because planning clear aligner or brace treatment — staging the movements, managing forces, controlling the final bite — requires knowledge beyond general dentistry.
The Istanbul clinic works with an orthodontist who assesses each case before any treatment is planned. A digital scan, photographs and a bite assessment are reviewed before a recommendation is made. The checklist for good candidacy includes:
- Healthy teeth and gums — active decay or periodontal disease must be treated first.
- Sufficient bone support — orthodontic forces are safe only when the supporting bone is healthy.
- Realistic expectations — tooth movement has limits; a thorough scan-based assessment is the only honest way to set them.
- Willingness to comply with wear requirements and remote monitoring throughout the treatment period.
We do not confirm aligner or brace treatment until an orthodontist has reviewed your scans. What looks simple on photographs can be more complex clinically — and vice versa. No treatment plan is finalised without that review.
What clear aligners and braces cost in Turkey
Orthodontic treatment in Istanbul is significantly less expensive than in the UK, Ireland or western Europe. The saving is real but should be considered alongside the remote-monitoring model that treatment abroad requires — this is a months-long process, not a single-trip procedure.
| Treatment | Istanbul (indicative) | UK / Ireland (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| Clear aligners (mild–moderate) | from €1,200 | £2,500–£4,500 |
| Invisalign (full series) | from €1,500 | £3,500–£6,000 |
| Metal braces (full treatment) | from €1,000 | £2,000–£4,000 |
| Ceramic braces (full treatment) | from €1,200 | £2,500–£4,500 |
